The Inner Dimension of Torah
Rabbi Chaim Zwick
The study of the inner beauty of the Torah enables us to understand the more hidden, secret and concealed aspects of creation. It helps us to probe more deeply into that which is driving and guiding our lives and our reality. Its study is aimed at increasing and heightening our sensitivity both to Hashem's love for His creation and His unified oneness.
Only the hidden dimension of Torah has the power to reveal to us the deepest secrets about our Creator's nature, His creative power, and His ultimate plan for creation. It also teaches us the manner in which His supernal realms function and the unique ways He governs the affairs of man. But most importantly, the inner secrets of the Torah focus primarily on Hashem and His relationship with us.
Whereas in the earlier generations, the study of the inner secrets of the Torah were reserved for a select few, the Arizal, the Vilna Goan and the Baal Shemtov, whose teachings dominate Torah thought to this day, state that in the generations before the coming of Moshiach, it is permissible and even an obligation to reveal to the world the hidden wisdom of the Torah.
The Arizal explains, as we approach the Messianic era, it becomes critical that this inner wisdom be spread. In his words, "It is a Mitzvah to reveal this wisdom now." The Arizal bases this on a statement from the Zohar,"...in the merit of this book (the Zohar) the Jews will be redeemed from their exile with mercy." The study of the inner dimension of the Torah, as revealed in the Zohar, has the power to prevent the difficult, traumatic events otherwise required for us to make the transition from our present state of consciousness to the elevated state required of the Messianic era.
